A space view of the Niger Delta

FdA Fashion Design And Marketing

For more than five centuries the fortunes of the Niger Delta have been closely tied to that of the global economy. For its slave ports, then palm industry, and most recently through the discovery of crude oil in the 1950s. Oil multinationals soon came to the fore, working in alliance with a local elite to strip the region of its wealth and despoil it. At the receiving end are the region's impoverished inhabitants: left with a poisoned environment, faced with government that never cares and victims of rival armed militant groups laying claim to territories. (Delta Nigeria. The Rape of Paradise 2011) Everyday more than two million barrels of oil are transported above ground from approximately 5,000 well, through the country in 7,000 kilometres of pipelines. According to a new study, between nine to eleven million barrels of oil have allegedly been spilled since drilling began in 1956. Only a tiny percentage of the profits reaches the region where the oil is actually extracted. The infrastructure of the delta, its public health and the availability of clean water and nutrition are in a disastrous state.(Last Rites Niger Delta. The Drama of Oil Production in Contemporary Photographs, Dr Christine Stelzig, 2012) Delta Treasure was created as a result of the injustices the people of the Niger Delta have had to withstand.
