BA (Hons) Surface Design
James Hollerbachâs latest work continues his 'Filthy Gorgeous London' theme for a small collection of one-off garments that were introduced at his graduation show in June 2011. The 'Filthy Gorgeous London' projects began just before the start of the final year of his degree. Inspired initially by lyrics from the Scissor Sistersâ 'Filthy Gorgeous' song and his relationship with london, before travelling across the dirty side of this gorgeous city of ours for inspiration. This is a journey that has included medieval filth, Charles Dickensâ Victorian London and present day environmental issues. Bringing together garment construction with dyed, screen-printed, collaged layers of fabrics & papers, he creates detailed designs that play with the contours of the body. Hollerbachâs approach to âthe body as a surfaceâ can be described as âscientific grunge.â An example of his earlier work that used the Filthy Gorgeous London theme is a prototype skirt consisting almost entirely of manipulated cigarette rolling papers and other smoking paraphernalia that are recycled to evoke the 5 senses. It consists of panels that can be interchanged on the body with safety pins to form alternative garments. The core lines and textures of these and co-ordinating sample panels inspired the print designâs used on Hollerbachâs following garments, such as his screen-printed kimono straitjacket. http://www.jameshollerbach.blogspot.com/ http://www.artsthread.com/p/jameshollerbach http://www.behance.net/JamesHollerbach http://uk.linkedin.com/pub/james-hollerbach/34/69/76a http://twitter.com/jamesh1975
