MA Costume Design For Performance
INTRODUCTION I am a creator who uses clothes as a medium. I collect, assemble, insert, uses the collages technics with garments and creates interesting spaces which the performer can explore and play with. I mainly uses recycling material and develop a collective work which implies people with different specificities. The goal is to create a visual story through the costume and movement. The concept and the meaning lead the aesthetic of my work. PROJECTS THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN Performer: Karen Bengo For the project "the Cunning little Vixen", I focused on the part where the Vixen is trapped by the forester and how this one wants to keep her as a domestic animal. In the same way, the performer is trapped in a big piece of fabric built with dresses which represent the "domestic women" cliché. She tries it in different ways, wants to escape but can't so she rips some pieces and at the end creates a new outfit which fit her and she leaves, free. RANYEVSKAYA'S MEMORIES Performer: Pippa Winslow"Ranyevskaya's memories" is based on the character Ranyevskaya from "The Cherry Orchard" by Anton Chekhov, this short film explore her struggling to move on and her haunted past. The costume I created is a double dress with an elegant shinny front which represent her facade and a back built with different elements collected from her past (her dead husband shirt and tie, children clothes and toys...) She is leaving her home and look one last time at herself and her past. A CLANDESTINE VOICE Final Master Project performed at the Lilian Baylis Studio Performers: Tunji Falana & Chloé Gayet CLANDESTINE: Hidden, secret. Somebody hiding oneâs name and existence from the legal authorities. VOICE: Expression of an opinion, a vote. âA clandestine voiceâ is a collaborative piece involving the participation of Illegal Immigrants who were interviewed and took part in the costume development and realisation. This piece aims to give them a voice, to raise awareness of an immigrantâs journey and to humanise the subject. It acts as the beginning of the process as the costume will then continue travelling to spread their stories. The costume is a statement built with the refugees' writing. It explores the idea of personal baggages and question their visibility in our everyday life. A CLANDESTINE VOICE AT THE (IN)XCLUSION FESTIVAL For more information: http://www.inxclusion.com/
