Urban Ladybird Kit

MA Textiles Futures

In 2009 I graduated from ESMOD Berlin in Fashion Design with a Womenswear Streetwear Collection. I recently finished my Master in Design for Textile Futures at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design London, in the UK. My research question is: What role can textiles play in supporting ladybirds within the urban environment? With the project "Urban Insect Habitats" I explored different research methods in order to create a product, which is both useful for the insects as well as engages people with their local insect life. Ladybirds are a known as a gardener’s best friend and play a key role in controlling common pests. However, numbers are in decline, due in part to the lack of appropriate hibernating spaces within an urban environment. This project explores how textile landscapes might encourage the survival and thriving of the ladybird in urban environments, and further recognise their valuable contribution to organic gardening.
