BA (Hons) Fine Art: Painting
Jessica Rutterford uses photography, drawing and note-taking to discover and push the societal confines that can be found in the everyday of London. Though a series of social experiments and attentive observations she attempts to re-define her own predetermined ideas of the behaviour of London's inhabitants. Her work is in a sense a documentary portrait, and through her orchestrations, she can clearly scrutinize human emotions in the "performance" that has become everyday life. Apart from creating situations, she is also intrigued by accidental events and chance occurrences that appear completely incongruous. Projects derive from anthropological and socio-psychological research. She seeks to investigate in a provocative and often contentious approach, only ever studying people she doesnât know. As she photographs, observes and progresses with her subjects, it becomes a personal discovery.
