CO-LAB - THE BATEKE 000

MA Digital Fashion

CO-LAB by Cari Marsden The Designer role is changing. The consumer is increasingly participating in the design process, digitally. CO-LAB presents the designer and the consumer with the opportunity to co-design as one brand. CO-LAB is a formalised collection made up of modular garments layered and bound together, using traditional knotting and threading techniques. Together the designer and consumer will co-create the end look. Knotting, threading, tying and combining as one. The CO-LAB digital interface creates an environment where the CO-LAB community can experiment, design, select and facilitate. The Designer + The Consumer = CO-LAB CO-COLLECTION + CO-SELECT + CO-STRING = CO-LAB Developing on from her BA project: CONNECTS, Cari was mainly inspired by body modification and surgery. Cari looked at tribal biomedical interpretations and through experimental pattern cutting created innovative silhouettes which also emphasised a female body through curvaceous seamlines and exposing laser cut holes. The traditional tribal inspired shapes were contrasted with a clinical and fresh colour palette of whites and blues to create an overall very modern look. Cari was also inspired by artists such as Maurizio Anzeri and Bridget Riley in order to create an optical illusion grid where cords could be fixed and tied onto, allowing the consumer or designer to modify the female body even more so. Cari Marsden is a British Fashion Designer who has recently finished her MA in Digital Fashion. Previous to this, Cari gained a 1st Class Ba (Hons) in Fashion Design (IND) from University of Leeds. Throughout education she has gained strong technical knowledge in pattern cutting and garment construction along with new digital production and design skills. Cari produced all pieces in her collection and is eager to create innovative shapes through experimental pattern cutting and digital processes. For her MA, Cari has created a futuristic vision for digital co-design fashion. Her final research project involved website development, digital brand development, film making and laser cutting. Cari has also gained industrial experience as an Assistant Product Manager and has already gained strong skills in project management, product development and customer liaison with fashion retailers. Cari is eager to explore new and creative digital approaches in fashion design.
