Fashion Exhibition for visually impaired and partially sighted people

MA Fashion Curation

I believe that curatorial practice is not just ‘where and how to arrange artifacts’ but it is a creation of ‘worlds’ that may enable visitors to think, experience, evoke and feel a wide range of emotions. Having attained a BA degree in Psychology, I was interested in applying the psychological knowledge into the field of curation. In fact, during the MA, I developed several projects and dissertations based on my previous studies together with curatorial disciplines. In setting up fashion exhibitions the most important intent/aim is not merely to entertain an audience but to make them aware of specific themes, to create a world where imagination is stimulated. In my opinion during an exhibition or museum’s viewing what is important is to avoid passivity towards a major interaction. I am interested in juxtaposing fashion with apparently different disciplines pushing the boundaries of the curatorial practice of fashion. Because fashion is so widely spread in contemporary society and it is largely comprehended by anyone, it can be exploited for good causes. For instance fashion can make people aware of certain themes or it can stimulate human interactions. So why not use fashion as a mean of personal growth? Final Project An Investigation into Fashion & Blindness – The final project started with the idea of understanding how visually impaired people experience fashion, a mainly visual process. I extensively investigated this unexplored field mainly interviewing blind and partially sighted people about how they perceive fashion and their physical appearances. The research ended with an exhibition proposal where visually impaired visitors are able to touch, feel, smell, weight fabrics, shapes, objects and, of course, clothes of different historical periods. Together with the exhibition I developed a series of educational events and talks especially designed for visually impaired people. Previous Projects Looking Twice: Fashion & Illusions – Curated by the MA Fashion Curation students as a group, we set up an exhibition around garments that create optic illusions and can deceive human eyes. The exhibition showcased the work of avant-garde fashion graduates. FashionAlienation – In this project fashion is represented as a mean to alienate people because it adds another ‘layer’ to human’s complex personality. In other words, fashion alienates humanity from their inner selves as if they had been wearing a mask. The exhibition would take place in The Old Vic Tunnels where Giorgio De Chirico’s mannequins wear Haute Couture gowns.
