MA Visual Arts (Fine Art)

I am currently Artist in Residence at King Edward's School, Witley. Central to my current work is contrasting spontaneous and gestural mark-making with laborious and painstaking process in a single work that incorporates both. This contrast usually manifests itself in the disruption of an expected pattern, which I have explored using hand-drawn lines cut into a variety of materials. These include acrylic, paper, linoleum and most recently MDF. For example, a grid created by a machine will fit together to form a scribbled attempt at a pattern. The clarity of the grid varies, and sometimes is difficult to discern. I use repetitive and physically demanding processes to create this disruption, which requires mental dedication and absolute concentration. This physical work itself is integral to my practice, and I take inspiration for making from making. Recently I have been using ‘by hand’ methods more and more because I think the evident process that goes into the work makes it more interesting for the viewer. Much of my work also attempts to bring to the fore barriers in communication between artist and viewer by creating screen-like structures or images.
