MA Visual Arts (Fine Art)
I am drawing objects, as a vehicle to explore ideas of the grotesque, abject and the uncanny. My work has a dark undertone, making ambiguous suggestions, which have the potential to unsettle and disturb. My drawings animate the inanimate treating the object as if it had a sensibility, making the banal perverted and sinister in an abstract and subtle manner. I am interested in how a banal object becomes ambiguous and therefore real to an individual, âthey can suggest shapes of the utmost horror to the mind obsessed by fearâ. Mike Kelly also talks about the object as âa kind of fetish, a replacement for some real thing that is missingâ¦the narcissistic personality projects its thoughts onto othersâ. In my drawings the combination of delicate pencil lines and unnerving subject can simultaneously repulse the viewer and attract them.
