BA (Hons) Fashion: Fashion Design Womenswear

Jalié Li recently graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design, specialising in Womenswear. Her final collection “inter-dreams” is contemporary and full of dreamer’s aesthetic. She got a lovely concept to the work - bringing inspiration from art, literature and romance to produce fashion. As a freelance designer, Jalié is one of the co-founder of an independent brand Jalié et Ponga. She occasionally designs wedding dress for private customers. She carries creativity everywhere she goes. _Jalié Li A/W 2013 This collection is about fairytales sort of dreamer’s aesthetic, and eventually called “inter-dreams”. It is a contemporary design, with an element of doomed romantic from the 19th century. It is a story about a girl who lives as a fairytales keeper. The story had been inspired by many elements, such as the characters in fairytales by Brothers Grimm and Oscar Wilde which illustrated by Arthur Rackham, and also the historical paintings and garments from the 19th century. Besides, the proportion, structure and silhouette are literal references to Michaël Borremans’s paintings, the concept of ‘wearing back to the front, and front to the back’. ‘I am continually pondering a sentence by Oscar Wilde, “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”’ said Jalié. It makes she wants to create something gloomy but full of hopes. A Keeper of Fairytales cares of all the fairytales, especially their artifacts. They reside in the fortress that holds every artifact from every fairytale. The fortress’ location is unknown, even to the forces of Good. Are you a Fairytales Keeper? “Romantic” was the name of the game, and she want to dissolve the boundaries between past and present, reality and delusion. All concepts are interpreted through pattern cutting methodology and fabrication respectively. These designs are mostly in slightly dark/muted colours, a sort of dreamy colour. “Weird-dreamy romantic” is the main mood Jalié wanted to portray with the collection, it builds on the styles of the past in order to move forward.
