2013 FW Byungmun Seo preview

MA Fashion Design Technology Menswear

Byungmun Seo is a visually provocative menswear ready-to-wear line. It displays an unconventional construction of garment that often plays with creative pattern cutting and pushes the boundaries of traditional fashion and silhouette. The philosophy of this label is that fashion needs to be functional first of all, but also conceive a style that reflects the mood and state of mind: poetic, sensitive and melancholic. The inspiration exudes a sense of discreet chic, the essence of timeless style, drawn on a monochromatic, poetic expression through experimental pattern cutting. Profile Byungmun Seo was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. He moved to London where he graduated London College of fashion in MA fashion design and technology. His collection was showcased at V & A museum. The collection was displayed in unconventional use of garment pattern, as well as in giving new uncommon meaning by creative pattern cutting. 2013 07 Showcasing 2014SS in Who’s Next in Paris 2013 07 Showcasing 2014SS in Premium Berlin 2013 06 Showcasing 2014SS in White Milan 2013 03 Catwalk Show at iD Dunedin Fashion Week 2013 01 iD International Emerging Designer finalist 2013 01 Showcase at Tranoi Homme in Paris 2013 01 Showcase at White show in Milan 2013 01 Showcase at Pitti Immagine Uomo in Firenze 2012 10 iD international emerging designer awards finalist 2012 10 WGSN GLOBAL FASHION AWARDS SHORTLIST FOR / Emerging designer of the year / 2012 10 Design Collaboration with /Re code/ 2012 10 Catwalk Show at 3D Print Live Show in London 2012 08 Popup Shop in London 2012 07 ‘Not Just A Label’ online store 2012 07 Assistant designer at / Aitor Throup / 2012 02 Catwalk Show at Victoria And Albert Museum 2012 12 Graduated from London College of Fashion in MA Fashion Design and Technology 2014 SS Byungmun Seo Collection concept -Paradox of non-existent existence Many creations have been derived and developed from the notion of the archetype of existing object. The idea about the archetype of the object has been also a recurring topic explored by many artists. But most archetypes of existing objects in modern society have been stuck in the concept that is predetermined by the notion of convenience for capitalism and materialism. They have been seen only in their designated perspective. If it is not existed in the way that they were supposed to be and most people expect to see, it can be perceived that it is non-existent as people tend to believe only what they have believed and they also see only what they want to see and it shows repulsion against the unfamiliar and new perspective of existing objects unconsciously so people believe that it is not existed. This paradox can be resolved by the fusion of the unexpected and inexistent aspect of objects and manifests in a resistance against the traditional and existing perspective of objects. We contemplated this paradox to create new beauty of existing object resisting preconceived idea and traditional perspective and, to envision new image of nonexistent objects with deviant perspective of them. And we pursue the imagery into construction of garment and contrast of fabrics to create new beauty giving them a new meaning and freedom of their perception. 2014 SS Byungmun Seo preview image Photographer_Kwangbok Jack Lee Make-up_Kyungju Claire Chung Hair_Kyungju Claire Chung / Heather Hyein Lee Stylist_Heather Hyein Lee / Yoon Yoon Chun Retoucher_MJ Kim Assistant_Chisung Ihn, Sujung Park 2013 FW Byungmun Seo Collection Concept - Styud of hidden recess of mind We are looking deeper into the immense shadows of the unconscious. Envisioning a full metamorphosis within the unconscious, we set the inherent dialectic in motion. This dialectic is resolved by the fusion of the unexpected and inexistent phenomena in the conscious and manifests in a resistance against the traditional and existing perspective of objects. We contemplated this hidden recess of the mind in freedom and ventured to liberate the mind of preconceived ideas, to release all objects from their customary association, and to revitalize the poetic imagery. And we pursue to develop this imagery into the construction of garment. The construction will be led by a single concept where a new silhouette is created by the spatial mating of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects. This also brings an aspect where such playing of shapes in construction refuses our initial perception of them and gives the objects a new meaning. 2013 FW Byungmun Seo Preview Image by Minkyu Kim A/W 2012 collection of Byungmun Seo 'Interpretation of alter ego in unconsciousness' This collection is indicative of the concept through observation of two different selves of human. One is true self, other is repressed another self of human caused by external pressure in this modern society and this repressed self can be expressed through unconscious. In this unconscious, there seems to be no rules, moralities set by the society and are the only place were the repressed human’s desire can convey itself. And the energy of these repressed desires are coming into ‘substitute activities’ such as dreams and parapraxis, which are expressed in the unconscious. And these energies could also be transmitted into creative activities. As a result, these creative activities can be metaphor of human’s true desire. With this in mind, this collection was derived from these creative activities to find another self of pattern cutting and the concept of this collection can be seen in two methodologies. one is 'Alter ego of pattern cutting' to replace garment patterns into the place which is not supposed to belong to them and other one is 'Imaginarium of pattern cutting' to show juxtaposition of unfamiliar and unexpected meeting of garment patterns. these concepts create new silhouette and also give new meanings to garment pattern.'Boundless Maze' Fashion short film Credits_ Produced by Byungmun Seo Directed by Chul Woo Aaron cho Written by Byungmun Seo Director of photography - Hyung Lee Production design by Tae Seok Kang Edited by Dong Hyun Yoo Make-up artist - Soo Jung Park, Ji Eun Choi A/W Menswear Collection by Byungmun Seo Bags designed by Tae Seok Kang Photo-Shoot Credits_ Photographer : Do hyung Lee Make-up : Pace Chen Model : Ben Warnock, Matt Hone Bags by Tak Seok Kang Contact: www.byungmunseo.com info@byungmunseo.com
