The hoarder

BA (Hons) Textile Design

This Collection is inspired by the human behavior of Hoarding that usually involves compulsive collecting. Hoarders are emotionally attached to their possessions and have explanations for why each item is important. To the hoarder their possessions might be needed in the future so they cannot be thrown away. Hoarder’s possessiveness of things is usually disorganized and often leaves the individual isolated, ashamed and embarrassed. There is a hoarder within all of us. We all have junk draws and closets full of useless bits and pieces we cannot throw away. A hoarders behavior is characterized by the excessive acquisition of and inability or unwillingness to discard large quantities of objects. This collection takes inspiration from this complex disorder. Focusing on multiples I developed a range of 3 Dimensional, print, stitch and stuffed techniques creating a visually stimulating collection of disorganized fashion fabrics. Focusing on the complex mindset of the hoarder I began to create my own hoards using multiples of objects and magazines. I used different case studies of hoarders as inspiration Watching the Hoarding documentary series on channel 40D and capturing screen shots of the hoarders environment inspired me greatly. I translated these drawings into fabric samples always referencing back to my initial starting point .I used many different processes layering, 3d, stitching boiling manipulating techniques I wanted to create a mix of 3 dimensional fashion fabrics that were modern and manipulated around the body instead of made to fit. My collection reflects Comme de garcon with its simple manipulations inspired my collection. Experimenting draping fabric on a stand enabled me to create simple shapes from one piece of fabric .Not using patterns instead manipulating the fabric around the body in the same way that hoarders are manipulates by their hoards .I let the material take control to create different structures
